Personal Information

Juliette was the first daughter of Louis and Ludivine L'Artaire. Her twin brother, Gregoire, was born a few minutes after her and the two were fiercely close throughout their childhood. Known as Louisa because of the confusion between her and her namesake.

Backstory

Educated at a small primary school that most of her brothers, sisters and other distant relatives were sent to, just outside of their hometown in Menton, Juliette had a fairly normal early life. She made friends, and spent a lot of time with her twin brother, Gregoire. Her and her brothers and sister had a fairly normal life, they went to school and spent the summers with their parents and aunts and uncles.

Juliette finished her schooling at age 18 in 1922. She was due to start university in the September of the same year, and after many arguments with her mother, she finally agreed. Her and her mother (Ludivine) were not getting along particularly well (rather, Juliette wanted to do things her mother did not necessarily approve of) and though where her mother wanted her to be, she refused to put any effort in. She stayed in school for the 22-23 semester, but returned home in 1923 for a month during the summer. Before leaving for college, however, her mother made it very clear that she would pay for her schooling, but nothing else. As a result, during her time at university, she found a job as a maid, but this did not pay enough for the high lifestyle she was used to. Instead of continuing or completing further education, she decided to become a prostitute. This paid well, had convenient hours, and she was happy to be appreciated for her slender and much coveted figure.

Juliette began to learn how to run the business while still working nights to her own schedule with her mother, aunt, Mathilde De Lorme, and her cousin, Pascale Devereux-De Lorme. Her mother fell ill in early 1925, and Juliette took over running the business for almost six months. Her mother died in mid 1925 and the business was co-run by Mathilde and Juliette until a sexual encounter was almost discovered by her cousin, who at the time, was beginning to suspect her hidden lifestyle. However, in early 1927, two years after her mother's death, she discovered she was pregnant and later that year gave birth to Marc (b. 1927). Upon discovering this, Mathilde and Jacques (her aunt and eldest brother respectively) decided it was no longer appropriate for a woman with a bastard child to be running one of the most prestigious fashion boutiques in France.

The family initially wanted to hand it to the next and only other female in the family, Odette. This worked well for almost seven years, but Odette's plans did not fit this mould. She gave up her inheritance. Mathilde was not impressed. Jacques came to an agreement that allowed him to pass it on to his eldest child, and daughter Delphine. The family unanimously decided to hand the business over to her once she was of age, and Odette, now with her own plans, was quite happy to pass it along.

Juliette continued to work as a prostitute after losing the inheritance of the business, and her younger brother (Guillaume) and his wife (Marianne) and their first daughter (Mirande) took care of Marc while Juliette worked. Guilliame was the only sibling to support Juliette in her not-so-respectable job choice. Marianne and Juliette were very close until Juliette's death in 1940. Juliette's younger brother moved to Nice in 1926, after their mother died, where he met Marianne. They married in 1927 just before Marc was born. Feeling that the being out of the city might be a better environment for her, Juliette uprooted her and her son and followed her younger brother to Nice.

As the news of war spread throughout the late 1930's, Juliette continued to work and take care of her young son, who, by the time the war started, was almost 12. He desperately wanted to go and fight, but aside from being far too young, the situation for France was looking less and less positive. Shortly after the war began in 1939, Juliette found herself in a more dangerous position than ever. After making an ill-informed decision to go to Paris to see her brother (in case anything happened), she was killed during the German occupation of France in June 1940.

What she didn't know, at the time of her death, however, was that the rest of her family was already in Nice, and were almost entirely unaffected by the war.

Marc was brought up by his aunt and uncle (Guilliaume and Marianne) and after finishing school in Paris, eventually moved back to Nice to be with the rest of his family.

Backstory: Simplified

Was supposed to inherit De Lorme Weddings after her mother's death, but was discovered to be a full-time prostitute, and was instead bequeathed to her younger sister, Odette.
