Haughley

About

The Haughley family are from Haughley, Suffolk. Deriving their name from the village they populated, they started with a couple who moved to the town in the mid 1200s. Though they did not identify with Haughley as a last name, their descendants took the name from the village and can trace their ancestry back to this couple. While the current Haughley family members are few and far between in Haughley, they are distantly related to the current Lord of the Manor, Jeffrey Bowden, who lives at Haughley House. Ronald Haughley, Astrid's grandfather, was married at St. Mary's Church, the town's parish.

As noted below, a member of the Gibson family (Michael Gibson, b. 1928) married Anne Haughley in 1951. Their heritage is also noted here for their connections to the family are also significant. The Gibson family are primarily Canadian.

Legacy

While not rich, many members of the Haughley family are widely known and regarded in the arts. Astrid Haughley is a rising journalist at the Perth Star in Perth, Australia, Ronald Haughley (her grandfather) was a member of a 60s pop band. His older sister, Emily Fenton-Haughley, was a broadway actress, who was most prominently involved with musicals such as Guys and Dolls, Peter Pan, and Cabin in the Sky. Their mother, Jessica Haughley (nee Davis), was a world-famous silent film star. Many other distant relations were also painters, composers and there are scattered professional dancers.
